On our great adventure

Croatia, a Gem of a Coastline…

Finally we were allowed to leave Bosnia without producing the insurance we couldn’t find and rode the 100 metres to enter Croatia…..

We rode the short distance to the city of Dubrovnik, the sun even came out to welcome us…it was very welcome after all the rain we have just been through… riding slowly down the hill we could see the old town surround by the amazing clear blue Adriatic sea..
We stopped for a few minutes to admire it’s jaw dropping beauty and to take the liners out of our jackets as the temperature was now rising…FAST….

In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Back on the bike we head off to the only campsite in Dubrovnik… Flipping heck it’s expensive 50 euros a night, so you can imagine what the cost of hotels around here are….

With the tent set up we walked down the lane from the campsite to the small beach area, the small pebble beach was quite busy with tourists swimming in the crystal clear sea, we dipped our toes and agreed to come down for a swim tomorrow, it was so good to be back near the sea again…

Later that afternoon we rode into old city, parked up outside the gate and walked along the old drawbridge and into the old city…WOW…this place is amazing tiny alley ways that house pubs, restaurants and gifts shops…people everywhere…we felt a bit scruffy in our ‘now’ faded t-shirts…thank goodness my hat could hide my hair that was in desperate need of attention!

We walked out along the harbour wall, even this gorgeous cat was enjoying the view looking out to sea..

The atmosphere was relaxed, and welcoming,we hoped none would notice not only our t-shirts but our faded Swede sandals that have served us well..

We checked the claim of this plaque, it was right…

Every other tourist were all dressed in their finest, but i guess there is a difference we’re not tourists we’re travellers…

Deciding to be a ‘tourists’ for the afternoon we sat down and enjoyed an expensive beer while taking in our surroundings and people watching while the sun went down…

There were black rain clouds on the horizon so we decided to make a dash back to the campsite, we got there just before the heavens opened, the rain poured for most of the night and at times it was torrential, we woke early to find that we were now sleeping on a water bed lol, the water somehow had collected and stayed beneath our tent, making the bottom of the tent very cold…

We got out the tent to dark skies …. Hoping desperately that the rain would stay away as we now need to dry our boots, even the inside of our helmets managed to get wet…

So we left all our bits and pieces to dry off, on our makeshift line, while we went for a walk under the threatening skies to the waterfront …
On our return we made some lunch, the sun had returned and was getting quite warm, so we decided to go back down the lane towards the beach for a swim, Clive felt the water and chickened out…

I slowly entered the water, boy it was cold, which was surprising for us I really expected it to be a lot warmer, once submerged it wasn’t too bad, Clive then bravely decided he would take a chance and come in, we could even see little fish swimming around…
Refreshingly cold would be the way to describe what the sea felt like…

Before we headed off to explore more of the old city we had to make a stop to the hospital as Clive had been suffering with a sore eye that was progressively getting worse as the day went on, it certainly looked sore- very red and inflamed…
Clive went in and shortly came out with prescription for some drops and a cream, luckily the doctor couldn’t find anything in his eye…
With the script filled, I set about putting in the drops to my ‘patient’ he was a bit of a baby…

Great thing about having a bike you can always find somewhere to park without too much trouble, even in the ever so busy old town of Dubrovnik..

The smell of pizza cooking was too much for us to pass up, we stopped and bought a slice and sat down on the wall that surrounds the city….
Feeling full we head off to explore the other parts of the old city that we didn’t get to see the previous day…

Later in the evening we stopped at a quaint little cafe in one of the many tiny alley ways and enjoyed a coffee, plus to use the wifi to check our e-mails..
We left the old town that evening just as it was starting to spit with rain, thankfully it didn’t rain hard like the previous night…
The next day we packed up and headed off, up the coast road…
As we crossed the bridge we stopped to put on our wet weather gear as we could see that there were some threatening black rain clouds looming…..

To my amusement as clive was leaning on the road barrier for support putting his leggings on when a goat head butted him and bumped him off….

We managed to dodge the rain clouds, and it turned out to be a beautiful day, following the smooth road that hugs the coastline we decided to stop early and enjoy the afternoon soaking up the sun and having a swim…

The little guest house we checked into was a little gem, only 20 Euros a night and our room had a balcony that overlooked the coast, after checking in we spent the afternoon relaxing…

We decided to have dinner at the restaurant of the guest house, which was a big mistake, the meal was awful…

The following morning was again bathed in sunshine and we had a great ride with great scenery, and like the previous day we stopped early to enjoy an afternoon by the sea…

We set up camp on the gravel courtyard, grapevines hanging down for shade…perfect…the old run down farm house that was situated next to the court yard, was ran by an old lady with a great Personality… she called us her Aussie lodgers…

Down by the waterfront there is a great piece of art of a sword that is pinned into the rocks…

We were in no hurry traveling through Croatia, we savoured every moment, the road was perfect the weather couldn’t be any better…this is the life…

10825145606_3c4d5016dc_b

We stopped at a great little fort that overlooks the sea and made a cup of tea…
The town of Zadar looked to good pass through, we parked the bike down by the old port and walked around the maze of old alleyways full of interesting shops and cafes…

We were again acosted by the smell of pizza cooking and stopped to have a slice…delicious..just taste testing, we have to see if it compares to the home of pizza, which we would soon be entering!!!

There was a outdoor exhibition of old roman ruins on display…

We spent a few hours wandering around before we got on the bike and headed for the border of our next country Slovenia…

10854100094_cb8a2e88e5_b
Waiting in line at the border we couldn’t resist a self portrait…

No passport shown here, just ride on through the passport control…
We rode through a few small towns surrounded by beautiful green fields.

10854308673_00fd7f2823_b

There were lots of places where you could do a bit of wild camping…pigs roasting on a spit was everywhere, and smelt sooo good, but we had not long eaten…

We spent a time of under an hour passing through this small country and our feet didn’t even touch the ground, within no time we were at the border of Italy, yet again no stopping at passport control just go on through…
What a stark difference with some of the borders we have had to cross…

  1. Looks like another country on the bucket list.
Glad your swede shoes lasted, but suede might last a bit longer lol.
I can just imagine the 3 older boys laughing if they saw that goat pushing dad
